Elko Regional Airport Weather

Foster and crew are plow early to get ready for the first incoming flights of the day.

Elko Regional Airport has two runways; Commercial runway 23/5, which is 150' x 8214' and the General Aviation runway 12/30, which is 60' x 2879'. Then add the general aviation ramps, airport terminal area and parking lots and it all adds up to a lot of snow to be pushed out of the way. They are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to be ready an hour before the first arrivals.

Foster is not alone in doing the work Trent Moyers, Rick Hofheins, and Steven Sauers II also share the load in addition to volunteers Luiz Nunes and Robert Lino.

In the past, the runways and other areas were plowed by the City of Elko Street Department. That changed when two behemoth snow machines were given to the Elko Regional Airport by Reno’s airport in 1998. The two machines made by Idaho Norland were manufactured in the late 1980's and still serve their purpose.

One is used for blowing/throwing snow and the other has a rotary broom attached for removing debris from the runways, taxiways and ramps of the airport. The machines need to fueled, inspected and ready to go for the early call time and there are a variety of other snow removal equipment that is used as well. They range from the small four-wheelers with a blade on the front to larger dump truck snowplows, to front-end loaders and then the Idaho Norland machines. There have been no delays due to snow removal. All in all the crew at the Airport keeps things running
